The inspiration for this product was taken from the popular Japanese folklore “Momotarō (sometimes Peach Boy in English renditions).”
This set includes Momotarō in the middle, followed by the dog, monkey, and pheasant —characters Momotarō befriends on his journeys. This particular piece depicts the adult Momotarō surrounded by his friends celebrating their victory after returning home from banishing the oni [demons of Japanese folklore].
The Kodai-gire used in all four characters’ costumes is from the Edo period (1603-1868).
The red kimono worn by Momotarō is made from figured satin. This opulent fabric was used in kimonos worn by the upper echelons of society in the Edo period. The other three companions’ costumes feature more subtle color schemes to bring out the vibrancy of Momotarō’s kimono.

The stump that Momotarō is sat upon is made from a cherry blossom (also known as sakura in Japanese) tree’s wood. The surface of the stump is decorated in gold paint (a mixture of a fine gold powder and natural glue)—a humble, yet thoughtful touch displaying the artist’s attention to detail.

The Momotarō doll has traditionally always been for male children and is often displayed on Boy’s Day (May 5th) which celebrates the healthy growth of a son. It is commonly given as a gift to parents who have just given birth to a boy. This became a tradition partly because Momotarō is the depiction of an ideal boy, and also for the characteristically long life of peaches; not forgetting other joyous messages found in the Momotarō tale.
This doll will stand firm in the face of adversity and strife to protect your precious child whenever it is displayed.
